This page will serve two main purposes:

1)  To teach you how the economy functions by organizing information into categories.

2)  To provide you at least two different perspectives to look at your future either as an Employee “E” or as an Investor “I” or both as an “E” and “I”.   (Note:  Two more perspectives are “S” Self-employed and “B” Business owner.  The idea of four different perspectives on how to make money are from the book Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki.)

Why $500?  This number symbolizes many ideas.  These ideas will be discussed throughout the year during all lessons of instruction.  To keep it simple, there are 500 companies that basically represent 75% of the U.S. market economy.  These companies are global leaders and major players in all sectors of the United States economy.  They are known as the S&P500.

We will analyze these companies because you might want to work for one of these businesses, or you might want to invest money in the company instead.  Whatever your pursuit, you need to understand what services and/or products they provide to consumers to make money.  Once you understand this aspect of the economy, you will be able to make connections to everyday observations to pursue your passion in life.

Lastly, we live in a globally competitive market place.  You need to be aware of the fierce competition in various careers that you may decide to pursue.  Additionally, if you want to invest and manage your own money, you need to be aware of the numerous investment opportunities that could help you reach your financial goals as an adult by having money make money.

You need to check out odesk.com   You need to realize that if you want to be a graphic designer ten years from now and charge $30/hour that you are competiting against others around the world who might charge a fraction of that cost to produce the same design or even a better design.  This example is provided not to scare or to intimidate you, but it is provided to be a motivational tool to ensure that you provide a better service or product than your competition regardless of geographic boundaries, race, gender, or age.  In other words, you become an expert in your field/career of study or maybe you decide to pursue something else altogether.

The format for the slides below are based on ideas from Investor’s Business Daily and the companies listed on the S&P500.
