Figurative language is the game here.  You must understand what the author is “doing” to understand poetry.  This page will simplify poems that seem like their written in another language even though they are still in English.

Lots of students struggle with poetry due to simply not understanding how idioms, metaphors, similes and analogies are used.  Authors use these literary devices to spice things up to keep away from the usual and the ordinary to make you think outside the box, figuratively and not literally.
